Audio novice w 604c in 612 cabinet has questions.
I'm new to audio, though I collect records and work in video/ make music documentaries. I happened upon a 604c w 1600a crossover, in what appears to be the original cab. I planned to sell it on ebay, photographed it today, gave it a basic rewire (it had some sort of 1944 TOBE Oilmite capacitor (?) in the mix, but only partly connected ) and tested out how it sounded. Listening to it I fell head over heels in love. It sounds like the studio session is live in my living room, and that's with just the one speaker. We now want to keep it, and I'll attempt to make space for it in our "music room".
I guess I have 4 questions for now.
Can I hurt it with my mediocre receiver? Do I need to a receiver rated to certain Ohms or some such?
What sort of baffling should I put back in? It appeared to have cotton and fiberglass in there, which shed a bunch over the years. I'd imagine there's a more modern option other than shoving that mess back in. NEVERMIND, I see that question answered here elsewhere, oops!
I think I smell a faint chemical odor once I started to use the speaker, is there a standard reason why that could be happening? I have a very sensitive nose. It sort of smells like kerosene or something oily, or insecticide perhaps.
Do I have it reconnected to the crossover properly? There should have been a Black, Green, Red and Yellow wire present-- Black and Green were obvious, but the color faded on the red and yellow, they both appeared brownish. One had a knot, I considered this the Red due to a slightly darker color, though it was kind of a crapshoot.
I saw the pretty 604 in cabinet that sold on ebay last week had the knotted wire on the same side, though that may be blind chance. I nervously tried it in both positions, but didn't hear a difference on a quick check and I didn't want to play around too much.
Sorry, I tried a few methods to post photos, the site will not let me until I post here 3 times (I'm new). I'll try to attach one pic for now, though it won't help with the rewire question and I have a link to a gallery of other pics.
Thanks for your help!
